John Buglass: Boats in a Coal Mine – The 18th Century Ships in the River Aire at Methley
October 6, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
After the catastrophic flooding of the open cast mine at Allerton Bywater the remains of up to nine 18th century river vessels along with ferry crossings and a series of dry docks and locks on the River Aire were left high and dry. After two years of excavation and 20yrs of research the results of this award winning project show that these remains were a very rare survival from the early years of the Aire and Calder Navigation. Also surviving within one of the vessels was evidence not only for its final cargo but for the people who were operating it.
