Joyce Hill: The Two Worlds of Libya – A Classical Perspective
May 5, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Since the fall of Colonel Gaddafi, Libya has shown itself to be a deeply divided country, with little or no cooperation between the western half centred on Tripoli, and the eastern half centred on Benghazi. Yet in fact history shows us that this divide has always been profound, going back to Phoenician, Ptolemaic and Carthaginian times and continuing within the Roman Empire and beyond. The talk, in exploring this history with reference to the amazingly well-preserved archaeological remains, gives a classical perspective to the present division and, in the light of this long view, inevitably leaves us with the question of whether Libya can ever be one country.
