An exploration of the landscape of a remote valley which since prehistory has been home to many but now supports just a few isolated farmsteads. Here Man has tilled the earth for centuries, a battle hard won and easily lost. Today the evidence for past habitation is there for those who seek to see in the hut circles and enclosures of early farmers to the carefully planned farmsteads and regular field patterns of the 19th century.

John Buglass: The Archaeology Around Yorkshire Reservoirs

As a result of a survey of 1300 ha of the woodlands that surround Yorkshire Water's reservoirs over 400 archaeological and historic sites were recorded of which nearly half had never previously been identified. These sites range from abandoned medieval villages and farmsteads through to highly unusual Second World War reservoir defences. The sites also included a navvy camp which once housed 1200 people; drown mills and villages; long lost pubs and evidence for who came and went around the reservoirs as…

Bob Barker: Recent excavations uncovering prehistoric Nidderdale
